Dear colleague,

the German Institute for International and Security Affairs - Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) would like to invite you to an expert exchange on

Power and Accountability of the European Parliament: Lessons-learned and Conclusions for the Coming Parliamentary Term

The European Parliament is about to finish its first term after the Lisbon Treaty that endowed it with new prerogatives.

In the last legislative period, the European Parliament dealt with some very salient issues: the legal adjustment to the biggest financial and economic crisis in a generation, the unprecedented pressure on digital rights, deciding on a financial transaction tax, negotiating with the Council on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, and endorsing the negotiations on a free trade and investment agreement with the US.

How did the European Parliament perform under its new prerogatives? Was  it able to shape policies and to fulfill its role of holding other EU institutions accountable? What conclusions can be drawn for the next parliamentary term?

Andreas Maurer, Professor for Political Science and European Integration at the University of Innsbruck and SWP Non-Resident Senior Fellow, will address these and other questions based on his year-long research as well as his recenttestimonial in front of the German Constitutional Court. Sonia Piedrafita, Research Fellow at the Center for European Policy Studieswill comment.

The discussion will be chaired by Dušan Reljić, Head of SWP Brussels.

This event will be held under the Chatham House Rule. We hope you will be able to join us and kindly ask you to register with us by e-mail to Brussels@swp-berlin.org.

 Yours sincerely,
